The Hispanic Population in the United States

• The United States has the fifth largest Spanish speaking population of the world

• The U.S. Hispanic population has grown from 4 million in 1950 to 37.4 million according to the 2000 Census

• 13.3% of the U S Population is of Hispanic origin

       • 38.8 million U.S. Hispanics (largest minority group)

•         One of every eight Americans is Hispanic (13.4% of the total population)

•         Fourth largest Hispanics population  (Mexico 105 MM, Colombia 42 MM, Spain 40 MM)

•         Over 80% of U.S. Hispanics reside in 10 states.

The U.S. Census office projects that in 2020:

v     One out of every five residents in the U.S. will be Hispanic.

v     The Hispanic community will grow to 63 million people.

v     The use of the Spanish language at home will have increased from 25 million in 2000 to 41 million by 2020.

  •         17% speak English at home.  

•         13% speak both languages at home.

 Internet Use

•         According to a recent Nielsen survey, Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group that uses the Internet.

 •         The percentage of Hispanics who visited the most popular websites grew 70% in 2002.

 •         Three out of every five Hispanics with Internet access at home use it daily, and 95% use the Internet at least once a week.

 The Use of the Radio  

•          The radio is the primary form of entertainment, news and information for Hispanics.

 •          95% of the U.S. Latinos not integrated in the dominant culture turn on the radio on a weekly basis in order to obtain information and for entertainment.

 •          The radio is used an average of 3.5 hours per day by Latinos

•  There are approximately 14,500 Hispanic evangelical churches in the United States.

 

•         There are 19,431 Catholic parishes in the United States. 6,000 parishes are predominantly Spanish speaking.

 

•         Of the total U.S. Hispanic population, 25 million are Catholics (they represent 40% of the total U.S. Catholic population).
