Seeking Help From on High
W hen the Broadway Association saluted Douglas Leigh, the 75-yearold creator of electrical signs and spectaculars, earlier this week, the luncheon invocation brought chuckles and scattered applause.
The Rev. Robert Rappleyea, pastor of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church on West 42d Street, thanked the Lord for the day's award winners: Mr. Leigh and others responsible for illuminating the Empire State, Citicorp, Helmsley and Crown Buildings and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
''We ask that you watch over Con Edison,'' Father Rappleyea said, ''so that their terminals don't fail and their volume of business increases and their rates decrease.''
''We're grateful that Mayor Koch is still in New York because we don't think he would like it in Albany,'' he prayed. ''Watch over the Broadway Association, that it may restore Broadway to the Great White Way as a place for all of us to enjoy goodness and entertainment.''
